2012 NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING (NYLT)

If your Troop/Crew is typical of most, you have a Scout/Venturer who is advancing on a regular basis, works well with the other youth in the Troop/Crew and leaders, and seems to go out of his/her way to help other Scouts/Venturers in the troop/crew.  National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is one way to show your Troop/Crew’s appreciation for his/her efforts and to provide this youth with the skills he/she will need to be an outstanding youth leader.  Is your Troop/Crew willing to invest $175.00 into the education of a future Troop/Crew leader?  In today’s economy, having the unit support the cost of NYLT training for at least one Scout/Venturer may provide them an opportunity to receive training they might not be able to otherwise afford.

The course is designed for a boy or girl of 14 years of age.  A Scoutmaster/Advisor, at his/her discretion may approve a youth of 13 years of age to attend an NYLT course if the youth is mature and is an outstanding performer.  As a Scout/Venturer only takes this course once, we want him/her to get the maximum benefit from this experience; therefore it is essential that he/she be able to take the stressful demands of this advanced course, which requires maturity, experience, and proficiency in basic camping skills.

The objectives of National Youth Leadership Training are:

• Give participants the confidence and knowledge to conduct the Troop/Crew program
• Provide participants with a clear understanding of team and personal development and how those elements relate to being a leader
• Guide the participants through the stages of team development
• Create an environment of Scouting/Venturing fellowship and fun guided by the Scout/Venture Oath and the Scout Law
• Give participants the opportunity to share ideas and experiences with youth from other Troop/Crews and teams
• Have fun and experience Scouting at its best

The 2012 National Youth Leadership Training will be held at Sand Hill Scout Reservation.  The training lasts six days starting with check-in at Noon on Sunday, July 15, 2012 and ending on the Friday, July 20, 2012 with check-out at 8:00 pm.  The cost is $175.00 per person through June 1st, 2012.  Between June 2nd and June 10th the fee is $200.00.  Registration closes June 10th, 2012 with all fees to be paid in full by this date.

Course Overview:

The course models a month in the life of a Troop/Crew – three meetings (one each day for the first three days) all leading up to a big outdoor experience (an overnight outpost camp).  The course uses the team method and presents model Team Leader Council meetings.

Teams are challenged early in the week to present to the NYLT Unit at the end of the week their “Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.”  While the challenge is designed to have them go through the four stages of team development, it will help teams and individual Scouts/Venturers internalize the leadership skills and concepts being presented to them along the way.

Throughout the course, the staff will be modeling the concepts and skills that are the core content of the course.  The focus of each session is not only knowledge but giving the youth a “Toolbox of Skills” that equips them with the “how.”

The course begins with the Teams finding their team vision and ends with the individuals refining a personal vision of how to take the skills back to their home Unit and communicate what he has learned.

Registration can be done on line, but each participant must complete the Participant Application and have it signed and returned to the Council Service Center before the registrant is accepted for the course.  The cost is $175.00 per person through June 1, 2012.  Between June 2nd and June 10th the fees is $200.00 and registration closes on June 10, 2012 with ALL fees due in full by close of business. The course must have 30 participants paid in full by June 10. 2012 or the course will be cancelled.  Download the information packet for more information.
